Matt Horton Yes in my day out in the North Sea
late 70's working for BP on Semi-Subs we had
basterised fishing boats as standby vessels with a
crew of 5, in the mid 80's we moved to more like
the vessels you see today. great times
Terry Wells still many ex-trawlers well into the
80s.
Terry Wells yes, I think that it was North Star that
BP used
Bob Littlechild Hung the bucket up at Retired Rig
Welder I was on there for Blandford Offshore in
the mid 80's. The G.F.'s were "Harmony
Hairspray" and the "Rat" We were in the TLQ - up
on the pipedeck. Noisy as feck when the 2
derricks were working.
Brian Woods Same Bob, I was out there '85 then
transferred to the Northern. Your right with the
GF's and the foremen were Larry Lanniman and
Jim Nesbitt (ex copper).... Good place to work
and went back to the Southern in '86 with .with
APG as Blandford lost the contract…
Richard Converted sidewinder trawlers - some of
the most seaworthy ships ever built, but not
designed for manoeuvrability! When bigger
workboats were running for shelter these standby
boats just went head to the wind and rode it out.
Brian Woods mentioned the Silver Pit. One group
that came out of the Cullen Report in a positive
light was the crew of the standby boat who went
back under time and again, knowing the risks.
Some never made it home. Things thankfully
changed after Piper because more specialist
vessels were introduced and operators had to
budget for them, rather than paying 2 shillings
and 6 pence a day for an aged workhorse.
Brian Woods That was the safety boat !!! Not
much to look at but do perform well in an
emergency to a certain level. The safety boat
stationed at Piper when it exploded was the same
type (Silver Pit) and done very well considering.
They have all been updated over time....
Sandy Harper Did a few stints on there as a
drilling technician when I was in my early 20s
John Stirton
